Technological Principles

Smart color-changing glass is made up of two layers of ultra-thin glass: one layer has an anode coating, the other layer has a cathode coating, and in between is an ionic conductor. When the charge moves the ions toward the anode, the glass begins to change color. The amount of charge that is controlled by the software determines the hue. Conversely, when the charge moves toward the cathode, the color of the glass becomes transparent. Transparency and color change are from the movement of ions from one side to the other, depending on whether the charge is added or removed. Once the desired color hue is reached, no additional power is required.

Today’s smart systems have integrated color-changing glass, electronic drives, gateways, sensors, and cloud automation systems. They can be controlled through smart phone apps and can provide remote maintenance service. Each piece of glass and sensor is connected to the cloud control system via a proprietary driver and system gateway, and can be automatically switched to the mode that best suits the user.
